Day 5 | To be continued...8/10/2018 After a long day of the Urban Safari we ended with some fun energizers with the whole team. After the funny games we took all the food together to prepare a nice BBQ. While Davinia was preparing the salads some were in the studio visiting one the famous rappers of Belgium “Young B”. He shared a quote with us that said “Opportunities are in your hands, if you’re working at your best." We listened to a few songs and shared our talents.
During the BBQ we were talking with some participants of the business team about their experiences. They where interested to contribute as a volunteer at City Pirates. Of course I shared my experience as a volunteer to inspire them and give them some tips how to be an inspiring volunteer in a young center. We had an amazing time together during the BBQ with a lot of delicious food. This week we started to create something beautiful together for the future. To be continued... Day 5 | The Urban Safari!8/10/2018 It's been a great afternoon performing this amazing project with Changemakerz and City Pirates; getting in touch with the community, the local businesses, investors, and the youngsters of the city.
We started the HQ of City Pirates, where Radja Nainggolan (famous soccer player) grew up. We were playing games such as "privilege basketball" and "dizzy ball" with the business people to make them aware of concepts like discrimination and let them experience what happens if you're working together to achieve goals from a win-win-perspective. The locals discovered how the different people in Linkeroever experience live in a different way. We made them do a race running running the stairs from the 25th floor of one of the flats in the block. We made them aware that some people have to walk the stairs with groceries to the 25st floor everyday when the elevator is broken while others who live across the street get out of their villa and get in their electric car to go to work. The team with the locals had a lot of fun visiting the elderly center while they played a "secret game", being there made them aware what the elderly do during day time. At the calisthenics park in the middle of the Chicago Block Daniel did some exercises with one pull up bar and used it as a metaphor for building a company with a few tools. Afterwards we got feedback and the results were great. Talking about how can we help the community on closing the gap between the lower class and the rest of the city using an Urban Safari. It makes people more aware of what's really going in those kind of areas. After the successful afternoon we came back to the HQ of City Pirates in Linkeroever where we all had fun at the barbecue. Lolo (Fifide) & Soufyan (City Pirates) Day 5 | Friday D-day!8/10/2018 Friday D-day! Everyone has been working all week on their Urban Safari and now is the day to make it all happen!
We start the day with breakfast and talk about how awesome the cultural evening/night was. We make our lunchpack and prepare ourselves for the new day. After breakfast we left the hostel to go back to the HQ of City Pirates where each Urban Safari group made their final touches and made everything perfect for the big afternoon. And big news! At lunch our own 'Games 4 Change' T-shirts had arrived!! This week we have been growing as a group and now we can also show it to everybody with pride!! Margherita (Fifide) & Robin (Kras Jeugdwerk/City Pirates) Day 4 | Intercultural evening!8/9/2018 After working hard on our group projects seperately in the afternoon, we gathered and presented some snippets of what each Urban Safari was going to be like. After that it was time to come together and learn more about each other.
We had a lot of time to learn about each other individually. So this evening it was the perfect moment to learn about all cultures. We organized an intercultural evening! Belgium started of with some snacks and showed the group some cultural food and drinks. After them the Netherlands started with a quiz testing the groups knowledge about the Dutch society and taught everyone about the diversity living in the country. The participants with roots in Ghana, Morocco and Surinam also shares some info about how their communities ended up in the Netherlands and shared some typical aspects of their cultures. The Portuguese gave us a lot of treats from their country and after checked to see how much of the group was actually Portuguese from the inside. The last group comes from Tenerife and they taught us about Spain by bringing not only food and drinks but actual pieces of their nature like different types of sand. And to finish this special evening we enjoyed the night with the music, food and other things we brought. Adriana (Tá a Mexer) & Jonathan (CHANGEMAKERz) Dag 4 | Last preperations8/9/2018 In the afternoon, we met with our teams to finish the plans for tomorrow and work hard to make the best of it, we all made a special invitation for our visitors. We were visiting the locations where we where going to organize the Urban Safari. We spoke with some local people, took pictures of the different locations and we walked trough the neighbourhood to make sure that everything is ready for tomorrow.
We are waiting for you! 😊 Day 4 | Opportunities of Erasmus+8/9/2018 It’s 8:00 am and Team Games 4 Change is awake to start the day on an energetic way. Daniel started the day with a dance class with music in front of the hostel.
After having a breakfast we moved to the HQ of City Pirates where we had a presentation of the National Agency of Erasmus+ in Belgium. They presented the opportunities, the different types of projects and the way to apply for them. Also, it was really interesting to know that we have many ways to do projects in/with other countries. In this way we can make dreams come true, we have many opportunities to travel around the world. After that, we were divided in 5 groups to brainstorm about some ideas we could use for new projects in art, sport, education, food and nature. We realised that with dedication and hard work we can achieve our goals and they aren’t as far as we used to think. We ended the morning in the best way. Jonathan made us feeling the real vibe with his short clap dance workshop. Olaya (Fifide) & Joana (Tá a Mexer) Day 3 | Evening8/8/2018 We began the evening with a self cooked meal at the Head Quarters of City Pirates in linkeroever. After that we played a new game called 'Weerwolven van Wakkerdam' (Werevolves from Wakkerdam), a real classic. We played it with a large group of 30 players. We found out that it was a challenge. Everyone had something to say, but it takes observation and patience to come up with good arguments and convince the others of your intentions. We where all surprises by the outcome of the game. There where some lessons learned about communication, codes and trust. We all liked the game, so we continued playing it when we came back to the hostel.
After the evening program we splited up in to a couple groups, some went in to the city for real Belgium waffle’s, others went to wash their clothes and some did something special for their secret friend... Leyla (City Pirates) & Saber aka Coach Maleeq (CHANGEMAKERz) Day 3 | Team building & awereness8/8/2018 Today we took our first steps in creating a Urban Safari. Each group (youngsters, locals and business) had the chance to create their own activities. First they had to explore the neighbourhood called Linkeroever. Based on what they saw, they created suitable activities. The activities were created and based on 2 themes: team building and awareness. Before dinner every group gave a presentation of their first concept of their Urban Safari. They got feedback from the others and received some ideas and tips to improve their concept. We are looking forward to continue developing the Urban Safari tomorrow!
Matej (City Pirates) & Miguel (FIFEDE) Day 2 | Locked up!8/7/2018 In the evening we went to an escape room. We got challenged to work together with people we just met one day ago and we had lots of fun (and sometimes where frustrated when we didn't find the right clues on time hahaha)! We got the challenge to solve problems by joining forces and we learned about how teamwork is important to solve difficult problems. We're going to use some of the elements of the escape room for the development of our Urban Safari's.
After the escape room we enjoyed the view on top of 'Museum aan de Stroom'. It's a museum that's on a small island at the old border. What a view of the skyline of Antwerp! Maria (Tá a Mexer) & Daniel (CHANGEMAKERz) |
